Can’t Leave Ithaca Without an Ithaca Bakery Panini and One Last Snowy Run

Hmm…How do I summarize these final 3 days in Ithaca after Thanksgiving..

I don’t usually run the day after a long-run but when you don’t have access to a gym and the sun is shinning bright, you just have to do things a little different.  The weather was perfect.  I didn’t stop to take a picture because I was too busy embracing reality and all its beauty      .

My ‘posterior tibial tendon’ has been acting up a bit and it wasn’t feeling great on this run so despite everything else being perfect, I cut my run short at 6 miles.  However, I wasn’t ready to cut my workout short so I found a small area and did a short Home Wod.  I did 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Squat, Burpee, Pushup.  Darn.  That was rough in the snow after a total of 16 miles in two days…


With snow covered spandex and wet gloves, I was ready to be done… and was anxously awaiting my eggs with Nuttzo and a side of cinnamon roasted butternut squash 🙂


I was not a fan of this whole tendon acting up so I went down to the lake after a nice little nap and stuck my feet in the ice-cold water.

 I have a feeling that is not what they mean by the term, ‘ice’…I also don’t think that it was great way to wake up from a cozy nap.


Ended the day with some (and by some I mean..A LOT) of sushi, pad thai, and of course…Froyo.

I decided to take today (Saturday) off because I my legs are pretty sore and I am not about to risk an injury for a run.  Instead, we spent the day shopping around Downtown Ithaca.  It wouldn’t be a complete Ithaca trip without picking up our favorite Finger Lake wines and a stop at the Ithaca Bakery.

This week was about enjoying a Thanksgiving break in a beautiful place with beautiful people.  I was lucky enough to go on glorious runs and I had plenty of wholesome meals but I also was lucky enough to be lazy, take long/relaxing naps and eat many delicious meals and desserts.

I like to limit myself to one or two cheat meals a week but every once in a while you need to just LIVE.

I hope to get out for one last beautiful, Ithaca run tomorrow morning before we head out.  But we’ll see if my legs have something else in mind…

A Turkey and Ten Mile Filled Thanksgiving

My first Thanksgiving in Ithaca was simply perfect.


Nothing like starting the day with a snowy 10-miler with this as the view. It was my first snowy run of the season and I hope this is a sign that it will be a great winter season for running. It was absolutely breath-taking. The snow flurries just added the perfect touch…I would say it felt like heaven but there is nothing heaven-like about those hills.


The mid-20 degree weather was surprisingly not too cold. I actually ended up shedding that top layer as always…


I think the sole purpose of that shirt is to add color to my pre-run pictures because it always ends up being ditched on the side of the road within 5 minutes.  I wonder how long it will be until someone else owns it…


What did stay on for the entire run were those incredibly warm and stylish socks.  Bought them at Dick’s the night before and they pretty much made my run doable.  I put them right over my ProCompression socks and they kept my toes completely dry.  It was amazing.


I was tempted to do 11 miles but the final 3 miles were up a massive hill (after a few previous hills) and that pretty much sealed the deal.  My legs were ready to be done.  So I called it at 10…exactly.


Came back to the house to a warm burning fire and quickly fired up some eggs smeared in Nuttzo and an apple.  Solid pre-game to the phenomenal Thanksgiving meal.

All in all, Thanksgiving was wonderful and there are so many things I am thankful for day in and day out.  I don’t need Thanksgiving to make me realize that.  I just need an open road.  

When people ask me, “Why do you run?”..I always respond with “It’s my time to think. It is the only time in my crazy day where I can sift through my thoughts with a conscious mind.  It is my time to reflect on life. Reflect on my future.  Reflect on my past.  Reflect on a conflict  Reflect on the things I can do to make myself a better person

First Snow Fall, Travel and REST

It wouldn’t be a festive Thanksgiving without a little snow, right?!

The snow is great… but not when you plan to travel 5 hours to Ithaca for Thanksgiving.  In an attempt to beat the snow storm, the alarm was set for a glorious 4am and off to Ithaca it was.  I can confidently say it was the fastest ride to and I was the worst co-pilot.

Lets just say that 5am cup of coffee DID NOT work its magic.

We JUST beat the snow and enjoyed a cozy afternoon inside.  Except for a short trip to Dick’s to get a new pair of snow boots…and maybe another pair of Asic running shoes.

After yesterday’s morning run and afternoon Crossfit workout, the rest day was much-needed.  Sometimes you just need to be epically lazy.  And with laziness comes anticipation for a great workout.  It is safe to say that I am ready and excited to get out and go for my first snowy long run in Ithaca tomorrow morning :)…and if I survive the snow, I have a feeling I am going to be spending the afternoon doing the whole hunting thing before a glorious Thanksgiving dinner.

I also have a feeling I am going to be dragging someone to the BEST froyo place in Ithaca. After some casual researching, I found out that since the froyo place is in a mall, it opens at the same time as the mall…which is 6pm…just about time for dessert, am I right?!

GOOD LUCK and be thankful that you have the opportunity to be healthy and strong enough to run….It sure is something to be thankful for. Take a moment throughout the fun-filled and busy day to take it all in and reflect on just how lucky you are to be you.


Monday for the Mom

Happy Monday!

Today’s post has nothing to do with me or my workouts.  It is about the amazing woman who introduced to me to running, has been by my side through it all and continuously inspires me to better myself.  My Mom.


She is one beautiful and amazing person

She turns 59 today (sorry mom) and ran the last 3 half marathons with me (all within 5 weeks)…incredible right?! She dominates her age group every time.

I always laugh when I ask her to do another race with me because her immediate response is, “Oh Melissa, you have to understand.. I am not your age, I can’t just run another half marathon”…I always take that as a “Yes” because she ends up killing it….and because race days are some of the few times we get to spend the entire day together.  Can’t help but cherish those days.

What’s even better is when we do racecations (vacation for a race) and spend an entire vacation together.  Speaking of Racecation… 3 more months until this lovely lady and I go back to Disney World for the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend.


This time around we are doing the goofy challenge (10k + Half Marathon)!  Stepping up our game the second time around! 

I also have to laugh about the time she lied to me about the length of a run we went on because it was the only way to get me to train for a Thanksgiving 10k that she signed me up for…and because I was young and easily fooled.  Needless to say,  I completed the run and still believe that complaining for the entire run actually improved my endurance 😉

I have a tendency to get wrapped up in my own life happenings that I forget to step back and remind myself just how lucky I am to have a mother like her.  I am beyond thankful to have such an inspiring, loving and supportive mother.  I really need to say that more often.  It means the world to have her in the stands cheering at all my past collegiate lacrosse games, at the finish line of all my races.. or better yet…running with me.

I would not be me without you

Weekend Workouts and a Free Froyo

Oh, weekend…why are you always so amazing?? I have a feeling every Sunday post will have the same first line.  But really.

After a brutal Friday afternoon crossfit workout..

…I  decided that the rest of the night should be spent on the couch.  Until this happened…Why is there nothing good on at 6? Alright FINE.  I’ll get up to get a RedBox movie.  And THAT was the extent of my night…no complaints here.

image Thankfully, the lazy Friday night transpired into a great Saturday morning run.  I planned on going out for 10 miles but with no upcoming races, I told myself to listen to my body before setting high expectations.  LUCKILY, my body was in tune with my mind and 10 miles was complete 🙂

Boy did it feel great to just get out there and run in the beautiful fall weather with no upcoming races to subconsciously stress over.  I was not thrilled about seeing 21 degrees on my phone when I got up, but it ended up feeling great.  I am getting used to the whole the first couple of miles are all about getting warm, suck it up.  Always easier said/typed than done.

I could attribute my decent pace to something cool and useful but really…I think it was because I was excited for my post run breakfast.  Food will always make you move faster.


..with a little pure maple syrup drizzled on there and a heaping shake of cinnamon.  Perfect.

Now lets fast forward a few hours later because I KNOW some of you are like “yuck that IS NOT perfect. But it is. The usual Saturday night cheat meal was perfect.  Went out to Indian food and…oh look my dessert was featured on instagram by @hungrybetches


Just kidding. But I DO think it was a close comparison.  In fact. There is a contest at the Froyo place that we go to that gives you the froyo for free if you hit 15 ounces EXACT when you weigh it.  Lets just say ONE of us got free froyo…and one of us went over 15 ounces…haha.  Can you guess who went over??? Yup.  Me. BUT LETS KEEP IN MIND WHO RAN 10 MILES EARLIER…

My satisfied belly and sore legs woke up early for a Sunday 90-minute Hot Yoga class. For anyone that thinks Yoga is easy..shame on you.  The first 3 minutes of today’s class was spent in a painful wall sit while the temperature was getting increasingly unbearable.   I wholeheartedly believe that today’s class was more challenging than many runs and even some crossfit workouts.  I signed up for a 10 class card because I have noticed such a difference in my performance outside of Yoga.  My posture. My flexibility.  My breathing.  It’s been great.


 The absurd amount of sweat..that is NOT great.

Hope everyone had a great weekend! Sunday is a little better knowing that there is only 2 1/2 days before a long weekend 🙂

The OFFICIAL Launch of the Blog

Though this is my 4th post, today was the day that I officially “launched my blog”.

Not going to lie, I was a bit nervous posting the link to my facebook and my instagram.  I think it’s the whole “vulnerability” factor.  Although my fitness instagram and blog are public, sometimes I still convince myself that no one is actually reading it so I am less afraid of being 100% real.  As soon as the link is posted, that little bit of insecurity starts kicking in.  Do I really want people to read my writing?  Is there a gramatical error in here that just made someone really annoyed? What if they think it’s terrible?  Are they going to judge my race results?  DOES THIS DARN THING EVEN WORK?  


I had to remind myself of the true purpose of this blog.  It’s not about flaunting my skills/results/knowledge..or lack there of all these.  It’s about being real and connecting with others who are trying to balance the craziness of being healthy but wanting a giant bowl of ice cream, getting in workouts but wanting to curl up on the couch and watch crap T.V and all the other mind battles we face on a daily basis.

Or I can still convince myself that no one is reading this despite all my social media posts and I am actually just talking to myself…now I feel awkward. 

But if you are reading this..THANK YOU! and I hope you continue.

Run and Rope Climbs

Yup. Just another fashionable start to the morning.



If this style is wrong then I don’t want to be right.  I can’t help that I love my ProCompression socks and my favorite spandex to run in are capris.



What? How did that get on here.  Guilty. Yup. This definitely was my Pandora station of choice and this is definitely the song that got me out the door.  Haha.  I typed  in 90’s Hip Hop (really digging a deeper hole here) and then 98 degrees popped up.  It was a given.  I had to do it.

I can confidently say that I completely embarassed myself before 6am even rolled around.  That’s pretty impressive.  Whats not so impressive was the length of my run, but that is totally okay.  Tonight’s Crossfit WOD is definitely not something I want to walk into with tired legs.


Man that’s a good amount of double unders. My ProCompression socks are not only an essential fashion statement on my runs but I also wear them to many Crossfit trainings.  They help protect my shins from bar bruises, help with the blood flowing during double unders, and they are ESSENTIAL when doing rope climbs.  Not a fan of rope burn all around my ankles.


Another essential part of training is a fueling pre-workout- and this is always my go to. Nothing beats a frozen banana smothered in NuttZo.
